Loren Abraham  |
Bio Leading “green” architect, author, industrial designer, educator and researcher, Loren Abraham has over 30 years experience in the building and construction industry. Since 1990 he has focused on ecological and human health, effective use of energy and resources and the creation of sustainable environments and livable communities. He has assisted in the development of “green” building standards and guidelines such as LEED and design tools and resources such as Loren is known as one of the countries leading designers of Green Roofs. As an architect for William McDonough + Partners, he developed a comprehensive cost benefit analysis for extensive green roofs while designing the widely publicized office building at 901 Cherry in San Bruno, California for the Gap. Since that time he has helped to design nearly a dozen green roofs including the two largest extensive green roofs in Minnesota, the Mdewankanton Sioux Community Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Minneapolis Central Library Green Roof. He is currently designing what promises to be the first of its kind “Green Roof Interpretive Center and Garden Classroom” for the new St. Paul Fire Station on West 7th Street. Loren has authored or co-authored more than 15 publications including Sustainable Building Technical Manual - Green Building Design, Construction and Operations, the Greening of the White House (Feasibility Study and Action Plans) and Designing Low Energy Buildings. He has also participated in the development of several online resources including the Whole Buildings Design Guide. He was a founding member of the US Green Building Council, recent chairman of the Sustainable Buildings Industries Council and he has worked on special task force teams for the White House, ASTM and the Department of Energy. He has also worked with leading Design firms such as William McDonough + Partners and Cesar Pelli Associates. His work has received numerous awards and been featured in many publications including Business Week, Architectural Record, Interiors and the Wall Street Journal. In 2003 Glass Magazine selected his Design firm, Abraham + Associates, as one of the most innovative architectural firms in the country.
Loren is a licensed Architect, certified Industrial Designer and an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, College of Design where he teaches graduate level courses in Environmental Technology, Thermal Design and Daylighting.
